Ripple and Coinbase say Ripple USD is now available to retail and institutional customers through Coinbase’s retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime. Their October 28 announcement puts the stablecoin in front of users on another major trading platform during Ripple’s Swell conference in New York.
The companies say customers can trade and manage RLUSD and convert U.S. dollars and supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into it at a one-to-one rate. Deposits and withdrawals are supported on the XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum, according to Ripple. Users should verify the network selected at both ends of a transfer before sending any asset.
Ripple says it will supply liquidity on Base. Access for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including the ability to use RLUSD as collateral, is to follow. That future capability is not evidence that collateral use has already begun, nor does platform availability establish how many customers will use the token.
RLUSD is designed to track the U.S. dollar. Ripple describes reserves including dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasury securities and cash equivalents. A stablecoin’s intended peg does not remove platform, custody or other risks.
For everyday users, the practical change is another venue to hold, trade and transfer RLUSD across supported networks. The announcement does not establish demand for XRP or predict the price of any token. Ripple and Coinbase executives are scheduled to discuss institutional stablecoin adoption at Swell later on October 28; a scheduled session is not a report of remarks already delivered.
